Q: What is the number one complaint of customers about feed dealers?
A: They don’t have enough feed on hand.
This is a common complaint of feed customers. This isn’t entirely the feed dealer’s fault and it isn’t entirely the customer’s fault.
A customer needs to communicate with their feed dealer regarding how many pigs they are feeding and how often they plan to purchase feed – e.g. weekly, twice a month, or once a month. If the customer doesn’t tell you this, you as a dealer need to ask them these questions.
Here is an example of good customer/dealer communication:
Customer to dealer: “I need 5 bags of 40-90 and 2 bags of EZ Tone.”
Dealer to customer: “How many pigs do you have on feed and how long do you expect this feed to last?”
Customer to dealer: “I have 5 pigs on feed and they weigh 100 lbs each.”
Dealer to Customer: “OK, 100 lb. pigs eat 4 lbs. per day and you have 5 pigs, so you will use 20-25 lbs. per day. You bought 350 lbs. of feed, so that should last about 2 weeks. Would you mind giving me a call in a week to let me know how many bags you’ll need next time, as I get my truck in every week. I want to keep your feed as fresh as possible and at the same time insure you will have your feed when you need it. I appreciate your business and want to be able to sell you the freshest feed available and have it when you need it.”
It’s just that simple - A little communication goes a LONG WAY.
Dealers and customers can both make their lives a lot easier with a little COMMUNICATION.
